Though this is a long video, it is an excellent description of how American History is often taught to minimize the "uncomfortable" parts in regards to creating, maintaining, and addressing slavery in the United States. This high school and middle school US History teacher recounts the version of American History he was taught which he went on to teach his students as well before learning a more honest and truthful history of slavery and reconstruction in the United States.
This teacher also goes on to show videos still published online and used in schools today to forward some of these false narratives by organizations like PragerU. It is important that teachers learn the more complete and accurate history of our country in order to stop perpetuating a narrative that can a best be described as wishful patriotic thinking and at worst be described as intentional white supremacy.
